How to Use a Milk Frother Like a Pro

A handheld milk frother is one of the most underrated tools in home coffee. For under $15, it transforms your morning coffee from a simple cup into a café-quality drink. But most people use it wrong — and get disappointing results. Here's how to use a milk frother like a pro.

Start with the Right Milk

Milk choice is the most important variable in frothing. Whole milk produces the richest, most stable foam because of its fat content. Oat milk (barista edition) is the best plant-based option — it foams well and has a naturally sweet, creamy flavor. Skim milk produces the most volume but the least creaminess. Avoid almond and coconut milk — they're difficult to foam and tend to separate quickly.

Heat the Milk First

Cold milk froths, but warm milk froths better and produces more stable foam. Heat your milk to 140–155°F before frothing — steaming but not boiling. Microwave for 60–90 seconds or warm on the stovetop. If you don't have a thermometer, heat until you see steam rising but the milk isn't bubbling.

Position the Frother Correctly

This is where most people go wrong. Don't submerge the frother all the way to the bottom. Position the whisk just below the surface of the milk — about 1 cm under — and angle it slightly. This position incorporates air into the milk as it spins, creating foam rather than just agitating the liquid.

Move It Up and Down

As the foam builds and the milk volume increases, slowly move the frother upward to keep the whisk just below the foam surface. This technique incorporates more air and creates a thicker, more uniform foam. The whole process takes 20–30 seconds for a single cup's worth of milk.

Tap and Swirl Before Pouring

After frothing, tap the pitcher or cup firmly on the counter 2–3 times to pop large bubbles, then swirl gently to integrate the foam and milk. This produces a smoother, more uniform texture — the difference between grainy foam and velvety microfoam. Pour immediately while the foam is still warm and integrated.

Clean It Immediately

Milk residue dries quickly and is difficult to remove once set. After every use, submerge the frother whisk in a glass of warm water and run it for 5–10 seconds. This removes milk residue instantly and keeps the frother performing at its best. A clean frother produces better foam than a dirty one.
