How to Host a Coffee Cupping Session at Home

Coffee cupping is the professional method for tasting and evaluating coffee. While it might sound intimidating, hosting a cupping session at home is easier than you think—and it's a fun way to explore different beans with friends.

What You'll Need

  • 3-5 different coffee beans (single origins work best)
  • Cupping bowls or small ceramic bowls (one per coffee)
  • Cupping spoons or soup spoons
  • Hot water (200°F / 93°C)
  • A grinder
  • A scale
  • Tasting note sheets

The Cupping Process

Step 1: Grind and Smell

Grind each coffee to a coarse consistency (like French press). Use 8.25 grams of coffee per 150ml of water. Place grounds in separate bowls and smell the dry fragrance—this is your first impression.

Step 2: Add Water

Pour hot water directly onto the grounds, saturating them completely. Start a timer for 4 minutes. As the coffee steeps, a crust will form on top.

Step 3: Break the Crust

At 4 minutes, use your spoon to gently push the crust back three times while smelling the aroma. This releases the coffee's full fragrance.

Step 4: Skim and Wait

Remove any foam and floating grounds from the surface. Wait another 5-10 minutes for the coffee to cool to tasting temperature.

Step 5: Slurp and Taste

Use your spoon to slurp the coffee loudly—this aerates it and spreads it across your palate. Note the flavors, acidity, body, and aftertaste.

What to Look For

Aroma: Fruity, floral, nutty, chocolatey, earthy?

Acidity: Bright and lively or smooth and mellow?

Body: Light and tea-like or heavy and syrupy?

Flavor: What specific notes do you detect?

Aftertaste: Does the flavor linger pleasantly?

Pro Cupping Tips

  • Cup the same coffee from different roasters to compare roast profiles
  • Keep a cupping journal to track your preferences
  • Cleanse your palate with water between coffees
  • Cup at different temperatures—flavors evolve as coffee cools
  • Make it social—cupping with friends reveals different perspectives

Cupping at home deepens your appreciation for coffee and helps you identify exactly what you love in a cup. Give it a try this weekend!
