How to Clean and Maintain Your Coffee Tools
Share
Clean coffee equipment makes better coffee. This is not a minor point — it's one of the most impactful variables in home brewing. Coffee oils accumulate in grinders, brewers, and cups, turn rancid over time, and add a stale, bitter note to every cup. A simple cleaning routine eliminates this problem entirely and keeps your equipment performing at its best. Here's how to clean and maintain every piece of your coffee setup.
Mugs and Cups: After Every Use
Rinse your mug with hot water immediately after use to prevent coffee stains from setting. For a thorough clean, wash with dish soap and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on ceramic — they scratch the glaze and create microscopic grooves where bacteria and coffee oils accumulate. For stubborn stains, fill the mug with hot water and a tablespoon of baking soda and let it soak for 30 minutes.

Milk Frother: After Every Use
Milk residue dries quickly and is difficult to remove once set. After every use, submerge the frother whisk in a glass of warm water and run it for 5–10 seconds. This removes milk residue instantly. Once a week, wash the whisk with dish soap and rinse thoroughly. A clean frother produces better foam than a dirty one.
Pour-Over Dripper: After Every Use
Rinse your pour-over dripper with hot water immediately after brewing to remove coffee grounds and oils. Once a week, wash with dish soap and a soft brush to remove accumulated oils. For ceramic drippers, avoid sudden temperature changes — don't pour cold water into a hot dripper, as thermal shock can cause cracking.
Coffee Grinder: Weekly
Coffee grinders accumulate oils and fine particles that go rancid and affect flavor. Once a week, brush out the grinding chamber with a small brush (many grinders come with one). Once a month, run a small amount of uncooked rice through the grinder to absorb oils, then brush out the residue. Never wash the grinding mechanism with water.
Coffee Station and Tray: Weekly
Wipe down your coffee station tray and surrounding surfaces weekly with a damp cloth. Coffee drips and grounds accumulate quickly and create a sticky residue that's harder to remove the longer it sits. A weekly wipe-down takes 2 minutes and keeps your station looking clean and intentional.

The Cleaning Schedule
After every use: rinse mugs, frother, and dripper. Weekly: wash all equipment with soap, wipe down the station, brush the grinder. Monthly: deep-clean the grinder, descale the machine if applicable, check for wear on seals and filters. This schedule takes less than 10 minutes per week and keeps your equipment performing at its best indefinitely.
