AeroPress Coffee: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide

AeroPress Coffee: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide

The AeroPress is one of the most versatile, forgiving, and travel-friendly coffee makers ever invented. It brews smooth, rich coffee in under two minutes, and it's nearly impossible to mess up.

If you're new to AeroPress or just picked one up, this guide will get you brewing great coffee right away.

What Is an AeroPress?

The AeroPress is a manual coffee maker that uses air pressure to push water through coffee grounds. It was invented in 2005 by Alan Adler (the same guy who created the Aerobie flying disc) and has since become a cult favorite among coffee enthusiasts.

It's compact, durable, affordable, and makes excellent coffee with minimal cleanup.

What You'll Need

  • AeroPress (comes with filters, scoop, and stirrer)
  • Fresh coffee beans
  • Grinder
  • Kettle
  • Mug or carafe
  • Timer

The Standard AeroPress Recipe

This is the classic method recommended by AeroPress. Once you master this, you can experiment with variations.

Step 1: Set up
Place a paper filter in the cap and rinse it with hot water. Attach the cap to the chamber and place it on your mug.

Step 2: Add coffee
Add 15–17 grams of coffee (about 2 scoops with the included scoop). Use a medium-fine grind, slightly finer than drip coffee.

Step 3: Add water
Heat water to 175–185°F (80–85°C). Pour water up to the ② mark on the chamber (about 200ml). Start your timer.

Step 4: Stir
Stir gently for 10 seconds to ensure all the grounds are saturated.

Step 5: Attach the plunger and wait
Insert the plunger and pull up slightly to create a vacuum seal. Wait until your timer hits 1:15.

Step 6: Press
Press down slowly and steadily. It should take about 20–30 seconds. Stop when you hear a hissing sound.

Step 7: Dilute and enjoy
The result is a concentrated coffee. Add hot water to taste (start with 50–100ml) or drink it as-is for a strong cup.

Inverted Method (Advanced)

Many AeroPress users prefer the inverted method, which allows for longer steep times without dripping.

Flip the AeroPress upside down (plunger on the bottom), add coffee and water, steep for 1–2 minutes, attach the cap, flip it onto your mug, and press. It's a bit trickier but gives you more control.

Tips for Better AeroPress Coffee

Experiment with grind size: Finer grinds = stronger, more intense coffee. Coarser grinds = lighter, cleaner cup.

Adjust water temperature: Hotter water extracts more (bolder flavor), cooler water extracts less (smoother, sweeter).

Try different steep times: Longer steeps = more extraction. Start at 1:15 and adjust from there.

Use fresh beans: Like any brewing method, fresh coffee makes a huge difference.

Why the AeroPress Is So Popular

It's fast, portable, easy to clean, and incredibly forgiving. You can make espresso-style coffee, American-style coffee, or cold brew. It's perfect for travel, camping, or small kitchens.

And because it's so versatile, there's an entire community of AeroPress enthusiasts experimenting with recipes. The World AeroPress Championship is a real thing.

If you want great coffee without the fuss, the AeroPress is hard to beat.
